Boy in the Woods II

Boy kneeling in a halloween costume with deer's head and antlers

And the same woods as before (but not my photo this time).

The house was aflutter with activity, cutting out and gluing of cardboard, and the eldest doing frantic last-minute airbrushing. "Why the rush?" I'd asked, "Halloween's still a week away." The detail I'd missed was that Ronwen and the youngest were volunteering for some Halloween campfire/trail thingy that afternoon.

The idea was they'd hide in the woods while a Park Instructor/witch would lead a bunch of kids along a trail, and at the right moment the witch would give the signal and Ronwen (vampire) and youngest (wendigo) would jump out and scare the bejesus out of the little dears.

As it turned out, the children were such a handful that the Park Instructor/witch never got them as far as Ronwen and youngest (eventually sending a text along the lines of "I'm really sorry, you can come back now, omg these kids I can't even," or so I presume). But at least it meant that mother and son got to bond (i.e. freeze their butts off) in the twilit woods for a couple of hours, and Ronwen got some cool photos.

(Halloween update: the youngest wore the outfit again while trick or treating in a friend's neighbourhood and was very pleased to report that it got dogs barking and caused a little kid to cry. Mask declared a great success)
