The Painting

A painting of trees and their reflections

We're staying in a Premier Inn and this print/painting is on the wall. I sit staring it at and say to my youngest "This is an interesting painting. I like the colours and I think it's clever how the artist has painted the trees and their reflections. This tree on the left is a bit strange though, it's just a reflection."

My son looks at it for a moment. "It is nice, but it's upside down," he says. "The ground's on top and the sky's below. That's why that tree looks like a reflection" and he carries on with whatever he's doing.

"Oh yeeeees" says I, a little sheepishly. Obviously. I don't know whether to be proud of my son or embarrassed of myself.

I wondered about the upside-downness, whether a decorator just hadn't realised, or was having some fun, or just didn't care after having to mount a zillion of them in a day. I took this photo and looking at it at home, sometime after, did an image search. It turns out that this print is in Premier Inns across the country and has been photographed many times. I was amused to find one other photo of it mounted upside down, the ventilation ducts above them showing that mine and the other were in different rooms. Honest mistakes? Guess I'll never know.
