Freedom is an application that disables networking on an Apple computer for up to eight hours at a time. Freedom will free you from the distractions of the internet, allowing you time to code, write, or create. At the end of your selected offline period, Freedom re-enables your network, restoring everything as normal.
If there was a Linux equivalent of this (and maybe there is?), I would be a lot more productive.

on Linux you have options:
a) use a laptop and wireless: use the hardware switch to switch it off
b) there is a command line option to switch on/off networking (you need to look that up). Use it with a cron job.

The problem with that is it's too easy to flip the wireless switch or restart the network service. I need something that won't restart networking until I reboot and prompts me with about 50 'are you sure?' messages before I can do that :-)
